Birr Castle and demesne is one of the most beautiful and well known castles in the Ireland, situated in the small Georgian town of Birr, it has stunning grounds in is home to once the largest telescope in the world. This is a film makers dream.
The castle is the private family home of the Parsons family who have lived there since the 1600's, who are always welcoming. The gardens of the demesne are extensive and open to the public. This location has a lot to offer such as the formal gardens, 'the great telescope', the science centre, a lake, river and waterfall, follies, Ireland's largest tree house, old coach houses, bridges and boat houses.
The castle and its grounds was used as the location for the short film 'The Girl with the Mechanical Maiden'. The demesne is unique and has the potential to host any number of large scale film productions. The addition of the lodge and Bothy on the grounds are perfect for secluded filming indoors. Its structures such as these scattered through out the demesne that brings Birr Castle to life and displays its diversity as a film location.
The river Camcor runs through the grounds that span over 50 hectares. Birr Castle Gardens has become world famous for its exotic tree and plant collections, rivers and lake, formal gardens, terraces and wildflower meadows. Birr Castle is 140 km from Co.Dublin, it is in the centre of Birr town and 47 km from M6 Kilbeggan exit.
